Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: September 20, 2001
RE: Oasis Market — False Alarms
Attached is correspondence received from Oasis Nlarket regarding payment for
outstanding false alarm charges. You will note that Oasis has outstanding false alarm
charges of $2,700 from the year 2000. Their total charges in 2000 were $4,300 for a total
of 16 false alarms. ($1,600 has already been paid — also note these are burglar alarms and
Oasis had no fire alarms in 2000.)
Mr. Stevens acknowledges the problems they were having with their alarm system and
accepts responsibility for the poor performance. Thus far in 2001, Oasis has had no false
alarms thereby indicating they have remedied the problem.
As you will note from Mr. Stevens' correspondence, their central office was unaware of
these problems and charges. He is asking for a reduction in the amount due from $2,700
to $1,000. The City is under no obligation to abate any of these fines. In fact, we can
assess the outstanding balance against the property to ensure collection.
Given that this excessive false alarm situation is rather unique in our experience and
given the fact that they have apparently remedied the problems, I would recommend we
abate $1,000.00 from the total amount they owe. The amount due, if you agree with my
recommendation, would be $1,700.00.
cc: Scott Stevens
Page 116
