• The road does need attention given its current deteriorated state.
♦ Leaving the ditches in place to protect existing trees is preferable and any method of
construction that retain them is preferable.
♦ Shifting the road towards Highway 36 would help minimise the impact on the
residential side of the street and should be pursued.
• Pedestrian safety is a concern and should be addressed as part of this project.
• Tree preservation is very important.
• Current drainage problems need to be dramatically improved.
♦ The neighbors also acknowledge that moving Viking Drive closer to Highway 36
would be preferable even if it meant redoing the recent planting project.
• They also indicated a willingness to consider a path in the rear of their lots to avoid
widening the road any further than necessary thereby lessening the impact to their
front yards.
One resident asked about the possibility of sidewalk in the front yard area. It was noted that
due to the existing right -of -way, and other features of this area, it would likely have a greater
impact to abutting properties than an on -road path.
It was also noted that another stage of the MNDOT screening project along Highway 36 is
yet to be completed. The planting barrier along Highway 36 could help mitigate the impact
of the road project.
In concluding the meeting, the City Administrator noted that this is a very difficult project and he
appreciated the input of the residents. He stated that staff will look at the various options that
may exist in making our report to the City Council. It is likely we will have to have further
discussions with this neighborhood before plans are finalized for this project. He thanked those
in attendance for taking the time to attend.
There being no further questions, the neighborhood meeting was adjourned.
Page 84
