MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
January 3,2008
March meeting date. The consensus of the commissioners is to move the neighborhood meeting
from the February 7°i meeting date to the March 6°' meeting date.
It was asked how the neighborhood would be notified of the meeting. Morelan stated that there
would be a mailer sent to all the neighbors within a certain radius of the skate park plus it would
be advertised to the public and a notice sent to the Little Canada Recreation Association
members. Morelan stated that there are some kids who would also like to provide input who
will be notified of the meeting date and time.
Clara Neis stated she had heard a concern from a resident that the skateboard park would be too
hidden in the selected location by the Old Fire Hall. Morelan stated that the selected sight is
adequately visible from the road and it does have the advantages of being shaded and out of the
wind. He thought the Old Fire Hall rink location would work out fine. Bill Sanders agreed that
this location would work out well for the skateboard park.
Fahey asked if there was any consideration for artificial refrigeration for the concrete to extend
the ice skating season. Sanders stated that that would require a coil system to be put within the
concrete and the cost for that would be approximately tripled in price for the concrete. Morelan
brought up the fact that the City of Roseville a couple of years ago had problems with their
refrigeration system and that it was extremely costly to refurbish it. Both Sanders and Morelan
thought the cost of having refrigeration for the concrete was not financially feasible for this
project.
Davis asked about whether the neighborhood should be involved with the naming of the skate
park. 1t was agreed that since the LCRA was purchasing the equipment that consideration be
given to any name request fiom that organization.
Bill Sanders displayed the park construction plans. There was a discussion on the recommended
sloping for proper drainage. Sanders explained that there would be a 5-6" slope stating that the
engineers were recommending as much slope as possible. Water should drain toward the center
and out the south end. The concrete slab will be 6" thick and there will be 6" of base material
under the concrete. Morelan asked how much gap there will be to the existing hockey boards.
Sanders stated the slab would come right up the hockey boards.
ACTIVITIES Morelan distributed and commented on the recent activities flyers which contained information
on the following activities:
• Basketball Clinic -there are twelve kids registered and it starts this Saturday.
• Winter Gymnastics -program is starting tonight with twelve children registered.
This is a program that typically does not allow parents to watch during the class. They have
a parent's night at the end of the session. It is a nine week program.
• Fastpitch Softball -this program is in conjunction with the Roseville Area Fastpitch Assn.
and we are offering one night of registration here at our facility.
• Hockey Skills -this program has been cancelled as only two kids enrolled in program.
• Skating Lessons -there are twenty-seven children registered and it starts this Saturday.
There are three half-hour sessions and runs through February.
