Honorable Mayor and City Council
March 3, 2000
Page Two
The street section from Market Place Drive to County Road C would be designed at the original
width of 34 feet face -of -curb to face -of -curb. Please see the attached proposed typical section
sheet. This would be done to maintain a more open feeling for the driver. The sidewalk would
continue on the north side of the street for the entire length.
There was a lengthy discussion about how to treat the 8 -foot amenity zone behind the curb. It
was pointed out that there is extensive salting of Little Canada Road. The salt accumulates on
the boulevards when the street is plowed in the winter and leaches into the soil during spring
melt. This high concentration of salt makes it difficult to maintain grass in the boulevard area. It
was suggested that paver brick be used in the 8 -foot zone. Due to the material and installation
costs, it was suggested that the paver brick only be used on the westerly end of Little Canada
Road. Openings would be provided for lights, trees, plantings and other amenities. Micheal
Schroeder of Hoisington Koegler, Inc. will be designing the amenities. The remaining boulevard
areas would be grass.
We are currently investigating the possibility of using NSP to design and install the street
lighting along Little Canada Road under the group 5 plan. Under this plan the NSP would own
and operate the lights for 25 years and the City would be billed at a reduced rate for the
electricity used for the lights.
If you have any questions regarding this information, please call.
Sincerely,
Howard R.
