MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JUNE 27, 2012
It was the consensus of the Council that the Planner should review the
City's definition sections of the Code relative to this issue and bring back
a recommendation for consideration.
2012 DEER The City Administrator presented a proposed Deer Management Plan for
CONTROL 2012 which is essentially the same plan that was in place last year. He
noted that the County was not able to do an aerial survey of the deer
population given the limited snow cover. The Administrator reported that
complaints about deer have fallen off; however, he felt this is because
residents know that the City is undertaking deer management. The
Administrator pointed out that the Community Survey showed strong
support for the City's deer management plan.
The Administrator indicated that if the Council is in support of the 2012
program, he would contact the impacted property owners about the hunt.
The Administrator reported that the Metro Bowhunters Resource Base
(MBRB) reviewed the plan as well as the proposed hunt areas and
indicated that they are not sure that the Spooner and Gervais sites are
worth hunting. The Administrator indicated that he left these sites in just
in case that changes.
Reis noted that last year only 33 deer were taken. He noted the count was
for 69 deer and asked if an upper limit should be placed on the number of
deer that can be taken. The Administrator reported that the 69 deer is only
for the northeast area and not the entire City. He estimated the deer
population at about 110, noting that the recommendation for a City our
size is for a population of 20. Blesener pointed out that if a lot of deer are
taken early in the hunt, the Council can stop the hunt at any time. The
Administrator agreed, and noted that numbers taken will continue to be
communicated to the Council as well as the citizens who have requested
this information.
Montour introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION NO. 2012 -6 -111 — ADOPTING THE 2012 DEER
MANAGEMENT PLAN AS RECOMMENDED BY THE CITY
ADMINISTRATOR
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by McGraw.
Ayes (5).
Nays (0).
