MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
JULY 19, 2012
5. Centerville Road /County Road D Phase 1 (Spooner Park to
Pioneer Park) — trail improvements - $75,000
Sanders felt that this should be a high priority given the need to connect
the two parks.
6. Country Drive and South Owasso Loop to Waterworks Trail —
trail improvements - $200,000
Sanders noted previous discussion was to construct a trail along the entire
length of Country Drive. This is a shorter route.
7. Pioneer Park — play area and site improvements - $50,000
Sanders reported that the play area at Pioneer Park is in pretty good shape,
but is outdated in terms of equipment.
Sanders presented a sketch of proposed improvements to Pioneer Park
which would incorporate the property at the southwest corner of the park.
These include the following: west side of the park: addition of 116
parking spaces, adding large shelter and walkways, adding tennis and
basketball courts; east side of the park: paving temporary parking area,
adding small shelter and walkway, and adding small play area.
The Director indicated that the property at the southwest corner of the park
is not currently for sale, but noted that the Council has asked if there
would be any interest in adding that corner onto Pioneer Park. With
regard to the temporary parking area at the southeast corner of the park,
the Director noted that the original plan was for an additional ballfield in
that area. However, given the high and consistent usage of this temporary
parking, the Director felt it was time to pave and improve that area.
Sanders indicated that at the time the lower shelter in Spooner Park is
replaced with a larger shelter, this small shelter could be moved to the
northeast corner of Pioneer Park. He noted that the existing small shelter
in Pioneer was moved there when the larger shelter was constructed in
Spooner.
Sullivan stated that a small play area on the east side of Pioneer Park
would be nice, noting that there is a lot of usage on that side of the park.
8. Spooner Park — lower picnic shelter replacement and upgrade
of lighting and electrical - $200,000
9. Spooner Park — play area improvements - $50,000
10. Thunder Bay Park — interpretive signage - $5,000
3
