515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117-1600
(651) 484 -2177 / FAX: (651) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Greg Schroeder, Public Works Director,*
DATE: April 27, 1999
RE: Replacement of 1989 One Ton Utility Truck
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaVaile
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
This memo is provided to clarify my April 22, 1999 memo on the purchase of a new utility truck
to replace the 1989 utility truck.
The one ton utility truck the crane is mounted on now required extensive suspension work to
enable it to handle the large dead weight of this crane. It was determined that the best value for
the City would be to upgrade this vehicle to a larger vehicle instead of modifying the suspension
of a one ton vehicle.
The next size larger truck a vehicle with a GVWR of 15,000 pounds. Since the replacement
vehicle will have a GVWR of 15,000 pounds, it will also be able to accommodate a bucket and
associated lifting/extending equipment without overloading the vehicle.
An evaluation of our vehicle needs and future uses has indicated a need for a bucket truck to
assist in tree trimming and elevated maintenance. However, I would like to evaluate additional
alternatives to a bucket system. No additional costs will be realized if the bucket purchase and
installation is delayed.
Therefore, I request authorization to purchase the Ford F450, purchase and install a new utility
box, and transfer the crane.
I also request authorization to purchase and install a bucket and lift system on this truck during
1999 if I can justify it's need and value to the City. This justification will be made to the City
Administrator once my evaluation is complete.
GS:kp
Page 9
