515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(651) 484 -2177 / FAX: (651) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Greg Schroeder, Public Works Director '
DATE: April 22, 1999
RE: Replacement of 1989 1 Ton Utility Truck
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
The 1989 1 ton utility truck has reached the end of its useful life and is scheduled and budgeted
to be replaced in 1999.
Based on an evaluation of our vehicle needs and future uses, it has been concluded that Public
Works needs two trucks with utility boxes. One utility truck (a new % ton truck) will be used as
a water service truck. The second utility truck will be used as a sewer /sign service truck. The
sewer /sign truck needs to have a small crane for lifting pumps and/or servicing signs. We
propose to remove the existing crane from the 1989 truck and transfer it to the new truck. This
results in a large dead weight on the vehicle. To accommodate this extra weight, we need to
upgrade the replacement vehicle to a 15,000 GVWR (a one ton vehicle has a GVWR of about
8,800 pounds).
The evaluation of our vehicle needs and future uses has also indicated a need for a bucket truck
to assist in the tree trimming and other elevated maintenance. Since the addition of another
vehicle would be costly to the City, it has been concluded that the best value for the City would
be to add the bucket to this vehicle. Since it has a GVWR of 15,000 pounds, we will not be
overloading this vehicle by adding the bucket and associated extending equipment.
To match our existing fleet, we have selected the Ford F450 as our vehicle of choice. We can
purchase this truck through the State of Minnesota Pricing Contract at a total cost for the chasis
of $28,040.50. We estimate the cost to purchase a new utility box, transfer the crane, and install
a bucket and lift system at $25,900 for a total operational vehicle cost of about $54,000. The
1999 budget is $54,000.
Authorization is requested to purchase this vehicle, purchase and install a utility box, transfer the
crane, and purchase and install a bucket and lift system.
GS:kp
Page 140
