January 25, 1999
Page 2
Mayor Fahey and Members of the Little Canada City Council
The question, "Why our community ?" I do not have specific quantities, but we have
taken a substantial amount of concrete and asphalt to recycle from within the City of
Little Canada. The different demolition and street reconstruction projects generate
concrete and asphalt. These same projects use this material for gravel sub -base. Both
applications are saving the City disposal and transportation costs.
There are many communities that generate and supply construction materials that are not
directly used in their communities. A North St. Paul company produces asphalt and
recycled gravel that is used throughout the northern metro area. West Lakeland is a well -
known source of gravel quarries that supplies material to the metropolitan area. Both
Minneapolis and St. Paul have asphalt and recycle facilities. New Brighton, Eden Prairie,
Burnsville, Maple Grove, Elk River, Monticello, Scandia, Apple Valley, Empire,
Denmark, Hastings, Shakopee, Grey Cloud, South St. Paul, Inver Grove Heights, and St.
Croix Valley also have asphalt and recycle operations. These are just the ones that FMF
buys materials from; I did not conduct a city to city survey.
We strive to be a good corporate citizen in the community by sponsoring local activities,
being attentive to citizens /city concerns on our job sites, promoting and establishing new
business in the community, and keeping a "clean" image at our Little Canada facilitates.
Our clean equipment is a trademark of our quality work. We have strong ties to Little
Canada and want to maintain those ties for years to come. The Fra -Dor operation is a
vital part of our whole business enterprise. We haul over 75% of the concrete material in
off our own projects, and use 50% of the crushed gravel on our own projects.
We have proven ourselves time and again that we operate a professionally managed
operation and feel that we deserve to be issued a license from the City of Little Canada to
continue our recycle operation. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. If you
have any questions or comments please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
F.M.
