MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 6, 1999
monetary donation toward the construction of a bog walk. The City would hire another
contractor to install it.
Bianchi asked what the construction of a bog walk would cost. The Director stated that he
was not sure. However, the cost would probably exceed $12,000.
Sackett Glaser suggested having Sanders prepare a sketch of what the bog walk would look
like and where it would be placed. She also suggested having Sanders prepare cost estimates
to review.
The Director stated that he prefers trail construction on dry land since it is the most
economical. Construction of a long bog walk would be very expensive. He stated that a trail
could be placed on dry land from McMenemy Street down to the cul -de -sac where it could
connect north to a bog walk.
Bianchi stated that this property has a unique potential for a nice addition to the park system.
She would prefer to make the development a win/win situation for everyone involved.
However, if a trail on dry land is in the best interest of the City, the Commission would have
to give it serious consideration. Sackett Glaser felt the bog walk would add diversity to the
City's park system.
Bianchi asked the Director to have Sanders prepare general cost estimates, sketches of the
trail and bog walk ideas, and a timeline for construction. She suggested that the Commission
meet at her house, 515 Viking Drive East, at 6:30 p.m. before the next meeting to take a tour
of the property. Letendra stated that he would notify the Pahnens of their tour.
MN TREE The Director stated that the Public Works Director has not received a definitive answer from
TRUST the Minnesota Tree Trust on their participation with the park projects. Their participation
should not be a factor on whether or not the City proceeds with the project.
BLEACHERS The Director stated that the Building Official will submit a written report on the bleachers.
All of our bleachers will need to be retrofitted or replaced with the possible exception of the
bleachers at Pioneer Park. However, age of the bleachers may not warrant retrofitting. This
project will not be started right away since the State may be appropriating funding.
CONCERTS Bianchi stated that there are four concerts scheduled this year for Wednesdays in July at 7
p.m. The bands and their costs are as follows:
July 7 Splatter Sisters $425
July 14 Hektor and the Gas Giants 500
July 21 RAHS J877 Band 200
July 28 Teddy Bear Band 595
$1,720
The Director stated that the City has budgeted $1,000 toward these concerts. In addition, he
solicited donations from the charitable organizations in the City. To -date, the donations
received are as follows:
Page 23
