TABLE 3
COMPARISON OF AGE CHARACTERISTICS
1980/1990
School Age Labor Force Retired
0 - 17 Percent 18 - 64 Percent 65+ Percent
1980 1,522 21.4 4,958 69.8 492 7.0
1990 1,950 21.7 6,107 68.1 911 10.2
SOURCE: 1980/1990 U.S. Census
While the percentage of the population in the labor force declined
in 1990, the actual labor force size increased. The percentage of
the school aged population increases during the period which shows
Little Canada does have a growing young family with children
population. The retired aged category showed the most significant
increase in both size and percentage. This is significant in that
Little Canada may need to address the needs of its elderly
population in the future, as the current trend nationwide is that
the elderly population is increasing due to healthier lifestyles
and health care improvements.
HOUSEHOLDS
Household information gives an indication of the demographic
composition of a community by identifying the number of households
within the City as compared with population and the average number
of persons per household. In 1990, the U.S. Census indicated a
total of 3,894 households and a household size of 2.3 persons, as
compared to 1970 with 995 households and a household size of 3.5.
The decline in number of persons per household on the City of
Little Canada, follows national social trends that indicate later
marriages, fewer children, more frequent divorce, and longer life
span.
TABLE 4
HOUSEHOLD GROWTH 1970 -1990
LITTLE CANADA
POPULATION HOUSEHOLD, ST7,F
1970 3,481 995 3.5
1980 7,102 2,937 2.4
1990 8,971 3,894 2.3
SOURCE: U.S. Census of Population, 1970, 1980, 1990
Page 81
