515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117-1600
(651) 484 -2177 / FAX: (651) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: September 4, 1998
RE: Amateur Boxing Matches at the Venetian Inn
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaVaile
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
Joe Vitale called asking about permission to hold outdoor boxing matches at the Venetian Inn on
Saturday, September 26th. Mr. Vitale informed me that alcohol will be sold outside in
conjunction with this event utilizing waitresses. No bars will be outside. There would also be no
admission charged for attendance. Crowds are estimated at 100 to 150 people. Hours of
operation are from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
As you may recall, the Venetian has held similar activities in the past. (See copy of minutes and
correspondence from 1990 attached.) In those instances, we had them provide on -site security,
and a fenced area for crowd control. (Mr. Vitale stated to me the fenced area was more related to
the fact that admission was charged. Therefore, it may not be needed.) I have also asked Mr.
Vitale to provide us with a site plan showing the general layout of this activity including parking
arrangements. These requests were made after consulting with the Sheriffs Department.
I have asked Mr. Vitale to be present at Wednesday's meeting to review this request in more
detail. Should you have any comments or questions in the meantime, please let me know.
JRH:kpv
cc: Joe Vitale, Venetian Inn
Jim Daly, Ramsey County Sheriffs Department
Page 12
