MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
JUNE 4, 1998
NEW BUSINESS
Marketplace Shopping Center is proposing to divide their site into three lots and the
Commission needs to decide if they want a cash or land park charge. Sanders stated he did
not think the Commission was interested in any parkland at the location. It was his
recommendation to take the cash. Smith stated that if the Soo Line was ever abandoned and
the City took it over, that it would be an option. Sanders stated that we would still have
access to the railroad from the street ride place.
Johnson asked how much money does the City get from this. Sanders stated it is based upon
the land value and the City Council will determine that. Johnson stated that the money
would go into the Park Development Fund. Sanders stated that we should not specifically
ear mark the money for an area because we do not want to do that in every area and we do
not want to set that as a precedent.
Smith asked if people were more apt to go to a commercial area or apt to go where there are
lakes and parks. Glaser stated that this is not terribly far from Main Street where the City
is trying to develop.
Johnson made the motion to accept the cash amount for the park donation that the city
council will determine.
Motioned seconded by Glaser.
Motion carried 5 -0.
Smith added that on the Park tour the members were discussing the issue of having trail
maps actually posted. Metal placard type trail maps and park maps that show in the City of
Little Canada where the parks and trails are and what they link up to. These would be posted
at junction points. Bianchi stated that these would be part of the Trail Plan. Sanders thought
it would be a nice idea to join with other communities to have a standardized system. Smith
thought something with having our insignia on our trail maps and having Maplewood have
their insignia on their maps.
Bianchi discussed the hand out for Concert in the Parks. She asked the members for help
in distributing flyers. Bianchi stated she handed the flyers to all the children at Little Canada
Elementary School. Bianchi stated that the Concerts will be advertised in the Le Petit,
Roseville Review and Pioneer Press.
Sanders announced that Vadnais Heights will be dedicating their new park, Coleman
Meadows located on the comer of McMenemy and County Road. F. The opening is Saturday
June 6, 1998 with events all day but the actual ceremony is at 12:30 p.m.
3
Page 33
