Shelly Schulz, City of Mankato and Mankato Area Public Schools
It has worked out well here in Mounds View (pop 12,1000.) We had some original
apprehension, especially with people being able to leave feedback, but generally the experience
has been overwhelmingly positive.
It's a great way to spread the word about what's happening in the community, reaching out to
people who may not take the time to read a quarterly newsletter, or even take the time to search
for information on our website. We've also posted crime alerts which have been appreciated by
our resident "friends ".
In a nutshell, it's a great idea, so long as somewhere on the page you have a policy /disclaimer
letting people know you reserve the right to delete off-topic, obscene, distasteful or inflammatory
posts. In the year since we launched the page, we've not had to delete anyone's posts.
http: / /www.facebook.com /pages /City -of- Mounds- View -MN/ 110190702360745
Here is our disclaimer:
"The City of Mounds View's use of external social media web sites is provided as a public
service. The City of Mounds View disclaims liability for ads, videos, promoted content or
comments accessible from any external web site. The responsibility for external content or
comments rests with the organizations or individuals providing them. Any inclusion of external
content or comments does not imply endorsement by the City of Mounds View. The City
reserves the right to delete any postings that are obscene, vulgar, threatening, contain profanities
or show the City or its residents in a negative manner."
Jim Ericson, City of Mounds View
Shakopee Launched its Facebook page in early January and it has gone very smoothly so far. We
receive very few comments from the public and none that have been a problem so far. We do
have a Social Media policy that lists certain conditions under which we will remove posts. I've
attached that if you want to look at the list.
Kris Wilson, City of Shakopee
Facebook is a great way for a City to connect with residents and other stakeholders in a
nontraditional way. I recommend establishing a Facebook "fan page," rather than account. This
allows you to manage things a little bit more easily than a standard account.
It's important to allow comments from the public on the page because it creates opportunity for
dialogue and gives people a reason to visit your page. If you don't have comments, you could
stick to your website and have the same impact.
2
71
