The pictures above show excessive mineral deposits in two separate manholes. Mineral
deposits form when groundwater leaks in through cracks or seams in the manhole walls.
The mineral deposits cause can reduce the size of the trough the sewage flows through
and potentially create backup problems. The deposits are also a sign of infiltration and
the City has been on a mission to eliminate as much infiltration as possible to reduce its
sewer bill and avoid penalties from the Metropolitan Council. The manholes are fully
cleaned and all mineral deposits are removed from the structure. Then all cracks and
seams are grouted with a special chemical grout that is completely waterproof and seals
up the cracks.
