515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: January 9, 1998
RE: Strategic Planning Session
MAYOR
Michael 1. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Sea 17P
Jim LaVaile
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
Our last strategic planning session was held in February of 1996. Even though some of our key
objectives will no doubt remain the same, I feel it is still a good idea to have the Council,
Commission representatives, and staff members get together periodically to review what has
been accomplished and to plan for future needs. Therefore, it is my recommendation that we
schedule a strategic planning session in the near future.
The question of how to conduct the session is my key concern. As you know, we have had
professional facilitators assist us in the past. The last such session cost us just under $2,200. In
1996, we retained Susan Hoyt, City Administrator from Falcon Heights, to facilitate the session.
This occurred over a shorter period of time (late afternoon/early evening versus a full day
session). The cost for this endeavor was under $150. I feel the latter approach or a self -
facilitated process can do the job for us.
Assuming the Council agrees with my initial recommendation to conduct a strategic planning
session, I am seeking your direction as to the duration of this session and the method of
facilitation.
JH:kv
Page 44
