MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRIL 22, 1998
2000 BASED ON THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE PARKS &
RECREATION DIRECTOR AND COMMISSION CHAIR
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Morelan.
Ayes (5) Scalze, Morelan, Pedersen, LaVaile, Fahey.
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
TELEVISE LaValle suggested that the Council consider the televising of Planning
COMMISSION Commission and Parks & Recreation Commission meetings. LaVaile
MEETINGS pointed out that there are senior citizens interested in matters being
discussed by the Parks & Recreation Commission. These seniors cannot
always attend a meeting and would be interested in viewing the meetings
from their homes.
Fahey pointed out that it is not legally required that the City televise
meetings.
The Administrator pointed out that there would be additional cost to the
City in televising these meetings in terms of production time. However,
the Cable TV budget could accommodate the expense.
Fahey suggested that the Commissions be asked for their opinion about
having their meetings televised. Scalze felt that televising Council
meetings has been a good thing. Morelan asked if the benefits received
from televising the meetings would be worth the cost. Fahey pointed out
that the money spent for televising meetings may be better spent televising
community events or recreation games.
Morelan pointed out that the Community Pride Committee has been
talking about promoting City businesses via Cable TV. Morelan
suggested that the money may be better spent on this effort. Morelan also
pointed out that the two Commissions are recommending bodies, and the
actual decisions are made at the Council level.
Pedersen felt that issues discussed at the Commission level are of interest
to the general public. Televising these meetings would make the public
aware of what is being discussed. Morelan suggested that perhaps the
Commission agendas should be published so that the public is aware of
what will be discussed and could attend meetings if they so desire.
Scalze felt it would be good for the Commissions to have their meetings
televised. Scalze suggested that the Council solicit the Commissions input
on this issue. Scalze suggested that the televising could be done on a trial
basis.
14
Page 35
