MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
JANUARY 31, 2013
Sanders reported that he has a proposal from another playground company
that he will present to the Commission as soon as DesRoches leaves the
meeting.
ADULT DesRoches presented equipment on HealthBeat adult fitness equipment
FITNESS that can be placed near playground structures or along trails to provide
EQUIPMENT workout opportunities for adults. He indicated that this equipment
replicates indoor fitness equipment with some pieces having a resistance
feature.
Sullivan asked if there was any money in the budget to put in this
equipment. The Director reported that there is no funding in the 2013
budget. The Parks Consultant suggested that this might be something that
a company like St. Jude Medical would be willing to sponsor. The
Consultant suggested that it may be interesting to install some of these
stations at the Spooner Park play area to see if they are used. DesRoches
stated that they have a department that could put together some
promotional materials that could be submitted to St. Jude along with a
funding request. Steinert asked the average cost. DesRoches replied that
a piece with pistons runs about $4,000 and one without about $1,500. The
Director asked if the equipment is placed on a paved surface. DesRoches
replied that they would recommend either a concrete or poured rubber
surface. Sullivan asked if these are typically kept accessible during the
winter months. DesRoches replied that they are not. He also pointed out
that if equipment is sponsored by a business, they have the ability to etch
in a corporate logo on the equipment. He indicated that he was in Korea last year and reported that they
have this type of equipment in urban parks. Vang asked if there was an
elliptical machine available. DesRoches replied not at this time, but one
is coming.
BUCHTHORN Sullivan reported that she will present information on buckthorn removal
REMOVAL and management as well as any available grant funding at the next
Commission meeting.
TELEVISING The City Clerk reported that the City Council made a decision at their
OF last meeting that beginning with March, all meetings of the Parks &
COMMISSION Recreation Commission will be televised on the City's Cable TV channel.
MEETINGS
4
