MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
APRIL 10, 1997
ARCHITECTURAL Mr. Jim Faulkner, architect representing Franklin Drywall, appeared
REVIEW - before the Commission requesting approval of the architectural elements
FRANKLIN of the building being proposed to be constructed for Franklin Drywall at
DRYWALL 5 West Viking Drive, Faulkner pointed out that the property is adjacent to
St. Jude Medical. Faulkner reported that Franklin Drywall is a
commercial drywall contractor currently located on Country Drive. The
building being proposed is 7,200 square feet of office /warehouse space.
The front 30 feet would consist of one -story office space. There would be
a brick veneer on this part of the building. The warehouse space would be
18 feet in height and would be constructed of grey rock -face block.
Faulkner asked that the recommendations outlined in the Planner's report
be reviewed. Beginning with Item #2, Faulkner reported that awnings
would be added over the south facing windows, and presented a diagram
to the Commission showing these awnings. Faulkner agreed with the
recommendations contained in Item #3 and indicated that he had some
ideas of what could be done and would incorporate them into the plan. As
recommended in Item #4, the front entry-way could be either recessed or
brought out and a gable top could be added. Again, there are a couple of
options which will be explored. Faulkner was in agreement with Item #5
and would present some ideas to the City Planner for his consideration.
Because of the visibility of the western side of the building, Faulkner
suggested that this detailing might be carried around to this side of the
building.
With regard to Item #1, Faulkner reported that they are proposing a natural
grey color for the block. The block is rock -face and has a lot of texture
which creates natural shadow lines. Faulkner reported that they would
prefer to keep the natural grey color, pointing out that his experience is a
colored block will fade. Faulkner reported that it would be cost -
prohibitive to brick the entire outside of the building. Their goal is to have
the building stay good - looking for as long as possible.
The City Planner reported that he has discussed the fading issue with other
architects who have indicated they have not had the problem. The rock -
face block is colored all the way through.
Faulkner reported that he has seen over an 8 to 9 year period that the block
has faded. The brown and buff colors have also had problems with
streaking. Faulkner pointed out that this is not a cost issue, but one of
keeping the building looking good over a long period of time. Faulkner
pointed out the building fits the site well, and brick is planned on the
exterior of the office area.
Montour asked about signage for the building
Page 48
