Page 2
suggestions are the bottom or the back of the item. Mark bicycles on the frame above the front wheel.
You can use clear nail polish to protect a surface after marking. Be sure to engrave ALL the letters and
numbers assigned to you on each item.
How do I use the engraving tool?
The engraver will mark on almost anything. Hold it upright and use slow, smooth strokes. As you
acquire new property, mark it right away. If you have school age children, include them in the project.
They will enjoy helping you and it will serve as a valuable crime prevention lesson for them. You may
also wish to assist them in marking some of their possessions.
What property should I mark?
Items most frequently taken in burglaries and thefts are: Televisions, VCR's, AM/FM Cassette Radios,
cameras, power tools, office equipment, stereo systems, electrical appliances, artwork, jewelry, coin
collections, musical instruments, bicycles, lawn equipment, boating /fishing equipment and other sporting
goods (including guns), and furniture. You may mark anything that is of value to you.
What about property that cannot be marked or is too valuable?
Items such as antiques, sterling silver, coin, stamp or any kind of collection, jewelry, china or heirlooms
that cannot be marked or would deface the appearance or devalue the item should be described as well as
possible and photographed. You may also wish to consider marking the item with an ultraviolet or
blacklight pen. These pens may be purchased for a small cost from some office supply stores.
Video taping the interior, exterior and contents of your home is also a good idea. Some home video stores
rent equipment by the day and some even do the taping for you for a fee. Video taping should not replace
the use of still photos.
How do I use the inventory forms?
Once you have completed the form, after marking all items, you may place a copy in a safe deposit box or
keep one on file with your insurance company The inventory is only to be used in the event of a loss, to
aid in the recovery of your property. Remember to UPDATE AND KEEP CURRENT!
What happens if I move away from the Ramsey County Contract City?
The PIN is yours as long as you are a resident in the United States. You simply need to send your PIN
and your change of name or address to the local police department where you originally registered each
time there is a change so that in the event that your property is stolen then recovered that agency can trace
the number to your new address. You may also obtain a PIN from the jurisdiction you move to and
engrave that below your original PIN.
Page 36
