10 Valley Lane -
Hastings, MN 55033 March 24, 1997
Mr. Joel Hanson
City of Little Canada
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, MN 55117
Dear Mr. Hanson:
At the City Council meeting on January 22, 1997, I presented a formal request,
on behalf of Saxon Lanes, to be granted a variance to the existing gambling
ordinance so that an outside charity could operate within the bowling center.
At that time I felt that no authorized charity was interested in the Saxon
Lanes pulltab business.
At that meeting the Mayor and the Council informed me that if I wanted
pulltabs at Saxon Lanes, I should negotiate with the authorized charities
within Little Canada.
On January 29, 1997, I sent the enclosed letter to the eight charities that are
authorized to conduct gambling operations within Little Canada businesses. I
received a telephone call from one charity expressing mild interest but they
voted to pass. There may be some hope yet, but it appears very slight. No
other charities contacted me so I assume there is no interest.
At this time, I am once again formally requesting a variance to the existing
ordinance so that I may bring in an experienced operator to Saxon Lanes.
This operator has assured me that they will commit to disbursing 100% of
their profits within the City of Little Canada.
As a significant taxpayer in the City of Little Canada, I believe Saxon Lanes
should be allowed this flexibility to help it compete financially in the bowling
business. To my knowledge, there are no other bowling centers in the
metropolitan area that operate without pulltabs.
Please bring up this issue again and tell me the proper procedure to obtain
another hearing. I will do whatever is required.
Sincerely,
SAXON LANES
Harvey L. Anderson
President
Enclosure
Page 39
