Summer Concert Report
The Parks and Recreation Commission sponsored four summer concerts in Spooner
Park in summer `97.
The first concert was held on Wednesday, July 16 with the Roseville Area Summer Jazz
Band performing. Fifty students of the Middle School and High School, under the
direction of the school band leader, played classic and contemporary jazz tunes. The
audience was estimated to be approximately 175 and they were accommodated nicely in
the ampitheatre setting. The band was given $50. for pizza. They reported to me that
they enjoyed playing in Spooner and would like to be invited back next year.
The second concert was held on Wednesday, July 30, with the Wally Olsen Band
performing. They played older music and some big band tunes. The audience size was
approximately 75, mostly seniors. The band reported they enjoyed playing in Spooner
and would like to play again next year. The cost of this band was $110.
The third concert was held Wednesday, August 13, with Hektor and the Gas Giants
performing. This local high school group plays rock and blues. The audience size was
approximately 60, somewhat smaller than we were anticipating. We paid them $100. and
they indicated interest in next year.
The fourth concert was the Teddy Bear Band, performing on August 27. The audience
size was approximately 225, mostly small children. The ampitheatre worked well for this
group and they indicated an interest in next year. We paid them $320.
Total expenditures for the concerts were $580.
The Commission feels, on the basis of this information, that there is an audience for the
summer concerts and we would like to see them continue next year. With more advanced
planning and promotion, we feel we can reach more people and increase attendance. We
would like to request a working budget of $1000. , with the intent of possibly adding
more concerts, getting some different bands, and allowing for promotional materials. If
approved, a sub - committee would be formed to work on specific details.
Respectfully Submitted,
Muriel Bianchi
Page 23
