months of the year, closed in the winter but heated to 50
degrees. It contains only artifacts original to the home
and has no records or papers. People doing research are
sent to the Minnesota Historical Society. Ramsey County has
no space at Gibb's Farm and limited space at Landmark
Center. We have found that people doing family research come
to Little Canada and it is doubtful that they would go to
St.Paul. It is questionable whether the Minnesota Historical
Society would be interested in granting preferrential
treatment to Little Canada and we would not be interested in
pursuing that alternative.
Alternative 4- As the Hansons indicate, the legal questions
have not been addressed. There is currently no security in
the building, many of the artifacts are not owned by the
society, but are on loan from citizens of the community. We
feel we are not meeting our obligations to adequately
protect these artifacts. The use of combustible materials by
the Parks Department always poses the threat of possible
fire.
In conclusion, a ruling on whether we can legally meet as we
currently do, must be answered. Each week brings different
persons to our premises to research family histories.
Perhaps we can accommodate the students by bringing things
downstairs or visiting the schools but it will not allow us
to do the kind of programs we had planned. We discussed
certain fund raisers and will continue to pursue these
matters. We are dedicated to the preservation of our
heritage and will work dilegently to that end. Thank you
for soliciting our input in the decision making process.
cc: Joel Hanson
Steve Garske
Council Members.
encl: Letter from Ray and Kathy Hanson
Coprrespondence from Michael Fahey
Page 10
