November 14, 1996
TO: Michael I. Fahey, Mayor
FROM: Little Canada Historical Society
RE: Historical Society Addition
Our Historical Society Board met on November 12, 1996, and
discussed at length the proposed options to our location
problem.
We are responding with what we feel is the concensus of the
board to these problems. We are aware of a letter directed
to you from Annette Freeman and we are enclosing a letter
from Ray and Kathy Hanson.
Alternative 1 - We do have a number of artifacts but our
heaviest concentration of materials is on our family
histories, genealogy, reference material and old city
records which require ample space to use in research.
Our kitchen is nearing completion. We had hoped to
demonstrate our roots as an agricultural community. I doubt
if we could carry out these plans at the City Center. Does
the City Council really want us to seperate milk, churn
butter, make bread, show canning and planting methods in
the Council chambers? These projects and the history of the
early schools seem to be of the most interest to the school
children.
Alternative 2- Regarding leased space -- if favorable cost
comparisons occur, that may be a better temporary solution
to our problem. Over time, it could be more costly than the
addition. If something should happen to the Historical
Society, the addition could still serve the city well.
Alternative 3- Regarding space in another Historical
Society -- Both Shoreview and Roseville have limited space
in their municipal building. North St. Paul has a free
standing building which serves them well. They have a
rather extensive collection of artifacts and are considering
an addition if funds become available. Maplewood meets at
the city center and we do not know if they have any
designated space, as they are having a hard time getting off
the ground. White Bear has a small home, open perhaps eight
Page 9
