raising efforts by the historical society. They have outgrown this building and are
wrestling with the idea of an addition to the existing building, or construction of a depot
somewhere near the snowman. The Rotary has offered to build the depot museum.
However, there is dissention among members of the historical society about the addition
versus depot. Some members have threatened to quit if the depot idea moves forward
since they feel it will be too small. The City Council is getting more involved in the
matter (the mayor and city manager are members of the Rotary.)
This historical society conducts an annual fundraiser and has $35,000 accumulated for
the addition. The cost is estimated at $100,000.
Roseville — This city has a historical society. The city provides no budget dollars, but
does provide space in the Roseville activity center (one classroom; however, that space
can be used for other meetings) as well as in -kind services (copying, including
information on the historical society in the quarterly recreation brochure, periodic use of
a display case at the city hall). The city is also providing a $4,000 loan so that the
historical society can put out a second edition of their history book. The loan is at no
interest and must be repaid within 3 years.
This historical society has about 75 members. They do not have many artifacts, and
because their space at the activity center is limited, many of the records they have are
stored in the homes of historical society members.
Roseville has determined it will cost approximately $1 million to renovate the activity
center. At this time the Council is considering tearing the building down and replacing it
with a community center near the city hall. Discussions include allocating a Heritage
Room to the Historical Society in this community center (similar in size to the one the
Historical Society has at the activity center). While the room would be about the same
size as they have now, it would have better storage facilities.
Vadnais Heights — Does not have a historical society.
Page 3
