meetings for several months. Burnsville will be advertising in their local newspaper or
will contact the government class at the high school to try and find replacements.
Burnsville has a Youth Advisory Board. This board runs from September through May
(school year). Attendance has been sporadic. It is an open board, anyone can attend.
The Board plans youth activities such as battle of the bands, dances, beach party, etc
There is a City staff member and a YMCA staff member who serve as liaisons to the
Board. Meetings are monthly. They try to get a cross - sections of kids, and work with the
student council, government class, and family support workers at the school to find
members. Meeting notices are sent out monthly to a list of kids they have developed.
Each kid is encouraged to bring a friend to the meeting. The City Council will
periodically refer issues to the Youth Advisory Board for discussion and comment.
Eagan — For three years this City tried having one youth representative from each of the
three high schools serve as members of a recreation sub - committee. They contacted
student councils and faculty advisors asking for recommendations on who should serve.
Attendance was inconsistent. Kids were too busy to attend. Eagan also observed that
kids had a difficult time with the advisory role and were more inclined to roll up their
sleeves and work on a specific task. Eagan has decided to let the program go by the
wayside for a while.
Eagan teenagers have communicated the fact that they want a teen center. There is a
Council Member working on this with a group of teenagers. This group is unofficial, and
is not endorsed by the City Council.
The Eagan Parks & Recreation Department contacts student councils each year asking for
input on the types of activities the City should offer for teenagers.
The high school government class puts on a shadowing program each year and students
spend the day with City employees.
Hopkins — Hopkins has one youth member on their Chemical Health Commission.
There is an old depot in Hopkins that a group of youth are renovating into a teen center.
Renovations are being overseen by City star. Once renovations are completed, these
youth will act as a governing board for the teen center and will work with the City on
planning youth activities at the center.
For your information I have attached copies of articles from the August issue of
Minnesota Cities.
