c 4; 2W% ceimacax
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484-4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: November 21, 1997
RE: 1998 Budget Modifications
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
I have two modifications to the proposed 1998 budget for your consideration prior to the Truth in
Taxation hearing on December 2, 1997. The first is a general fund item. I will be adjusting the
Sheriff's Department contract amount down by an additional $900 to reflect a reduction
associated with the Cops Ahead grant and the Rice Street corridor car. A quick summary is we
were paying 1/3 of the cost of this officer, but were not receiving the same percentage in the
revenue for police officer State aid. The Sheriff's Department will make this correction in the
1998 reconciliation process.
The next item is in the general capital improvement fund. I have added $8,060 to the Old Fire
Hall portion of the 1998 general capital improvement fund budget. This is to allow for the
acquisition of new tables and chairs, a coffee pot, and paving of an additional portion of the
lower parking area. These improvements will be necessary if we are going to continue the
leasing of this space. (A copy of this information was distributed in the information update dated
November 19, 1997.)
Subject to any comments you may have, I will prepare the presentation for the Truth in Taxation
hearing based on a 0% net levy. At this time, I have not identified the remaining source of the
$2,200 of revenue in the general fund to attain the 0% net levy. As we discussed at the last
budget workshop, the levy buy down option will be a last resort. I am hopeful that other items
will develop before we adopt the budget on December 17, 1997 which will eliminate the need for
that option. If you are not comfortable with my approach, please advise me in order that I can
adjust it prior to the Truth in Taxation hearing.
JRH:kpv
Page 169
