exhibit could be a large mirror with military helmets, uniforms,
wedding dresses, etc. which children could try on and see themselves
in the mirror. Nystuen stated that not all artifacts need to be
saved, and uniforms are one.
Nystuen suggested that the HS convey to the Council that the
collection they have is excellent and that there is more to be done.
Jean Donovan asked how a new space should be allocated.
Nystuen replied that a large open area was necessary with movable
walls. There should be a lot of electrical plug -ins, and no windows
(vandalism concern and damage sunlight can do to artifacts). Nystuen
reported that one HS painted a large map on the floor of their city
which highlighted historical areas, etc. People could then walk about
the town and get a feel for it. Another thing the HS could do is show
people how Little Canada looked before the freeway went in.
Nystuen suggested that new space be allocated 40% to storage, 30% to
exhibits, and 30% to office space. Nystuen also reported that the HS
would not want things out all the time. Six months should be the
maximum so that artifacts are not damaged. Nystuen suggested that the
HS go around and visit neighboring historical societies to see what
they are doing and then the Little Canada HS can offer something
different so people have a reason to come and visit it.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy G l nzer
Recording Secretary
5
Page 8
