every Union soldier was given 160 acres of land for serving in the
Civil War. Many came to Minnesota to claim their land.) Get people
guessing and interested.
Nystuen pointed out that many people are interested in the military.
Nystuen suggested the HS have a large map of the world. Run an
article in the newsletter telling Little Canada Veterans of any war
that they will get a pin and can place that pin on the world map
showing where they served. Nystuen stated that most everyone is proud
of their service to their country and will come in and place their
pin. This is a way to get people interested in the HS. Additional
information can be obtained from these veterans by having them fill
out a questionnaire telling where they served, what their rank was,
etc. The HS might be surprised at the stories they will learn and
there may be residents the HS will want to interview further as a
result. Such a map can also be done with nationalities, having
residents locate where their families came from. This sort of thing
gets people into the HS and volunteering.
Nystuen stated the HS has an excellent collection, but if it is all
stored in books and files, people will not take the time to look
through it.
Nystuen suggested one of the first displays as one enters the HS
should be to show people where they are, how Little Canada got
started, when the HS started, etc.
Nystuen stated that in order to do all the things a HS should do, a
mission statement and long -range plan is needed. The HS will also
need the necessary space. Nystuen stated that while this space at the
old fire station is nice, people will drive right by.
Nystuen stated that the things the HS has are invaluable, and one
cannot put a price on them. The collection becomes more valuable each
year. Nystuen stated that the HS is an asset for the City and it is
important that heritage is remembered. A HS can foster pride in the
community.
Jean Donovan asked if Nystuen was available to provide on -going
assistance.
Nystuen replied that he could provide samples of mission statements
and long -range plans. He can also provide ideas and suggested for
exhibits. Nystuen suggested that a computer system was very important
for the HS cataloguing system, and suggested that a used computer
could be purchased for about $500 and a color printer for slightly
over $350.
Hanson thanked Nystuen for the information he provided, and agreed
that the HS has valuable artifacts and information which needs a new
home.
Nystuen agreed that the collection was very, very valuable and
worthwhile. More space is needed to make it accessible to everyone
through exhibits and demonstrations. Nystuen also suggested that one
4
Page 7
