MINUTES PLANNING COMMISSION MARCH 14, 1996 the City's B -3 Districts. This matter will be discussed in detail at the April meeting. COMP PLAN The Planning Commission was invited to attend a WORKSHOP workshop with the City Council on March 27th at 6 P.M. to discuss the Comprehensive Plan update. ADJOURN Schletty recommended that the Planning Commission meeting be adjourned. Motion seconded by Keis. Motion carried 6 - 0. ARCHITECTURAL At this point in the meeting, 8:00 P.M., the Planning REVIEW Commission meeting was adjourned. The meeting was then BOARD reconvened as the Architectural Review Board. MARKET PLACE The City Planner reviewed his report dated March 14, SIGN 1996 regarding the request for approval of construction teaof a new freestanding sign to replace the existing sign at the entrance to the shopping center along Rice Street. The proposed sign is 400 square feet in area. The Planner pointed out that last year a variance was approved increasing the sign size to 400 square feet from the 200 square foot maximum allowed. The Planner reported that he has reviewed the request in terms of how it meets the architectural guidelines for the area. The Planner noted the sign poles appear to be metal, while the signs themselves appear to be plastic back -lit panels. The architectural guidelines prohibit illuminated or non - illuminated plastic panel signs. The guidelines also state that the sign should be constructed of natural materials which are compatible with the prominent building materials, and aesthetically compatible with the area and the building. The Planner indicated a metal or wood sign would be allowable, and lighting for the sign should be from an outside source. The Planner asked if the height of the sign would be increased from what is there now. 6 Page 66
