MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
MARCH 14, 1996
Bob Grootwassink, owner of the Market Place Shopping
Center, replied that the height of the sign is not
being increased. However, the width of the sign is
proposed to be doubled. Grootwassink questioned the
Planner's comment that the sign cannot be lit.
The City Planner replied that back -lit plastic signs
are not allowed. However, a metal or wood sign would
be allowed and could be lit from an outside source.
Grootwassink asked if there were any other signs on
Rice Street which would meet the architectural
guidelines.
Keis replied that the architectural guidelines were
recently adopted in order to create a new image for the
area.
The City Planner pointed out there is brick on the
exterior of the Market Place, and suggested brick could
be used to encase the sign poles. The Planner
suggested the property owner propose something which
would architecturally match the look of the shopping
center.
Mark Hotzler, the Market Place Shopping Center,
indicated the sign would conform with the colors of the
new facade on the shopping center.
Carson suggested the sign could be designed to have a
similar look as the towers on the shopping center.
The Planner indicated it would not take major changes
for the sign to conform to architectural guidelines.
The sign should have a more uniform look with the
shopping center. The Planner pointed out that the
architectural guidelines are part of the City's goal to
improve the look of the area. The Planner suggested
the sign poles be encased in brick or metal to match
the shopping center.
Grootwassink asked for examples of the type of sign the
Planner is referring to.
The Planner pointed out the sign at St. Croix Mall was
made to look like the architectural features of the
shopping center.
7
Page 67
