MINUTES <br />PLANNING COMMISSION <br />MARCH 14, 1996 <br />Grootwassink pointed out that that particular mall is <br />almost in foreclosure. Grootwassink stated that his <br />goal is to get signage for his tenants and the cash <br />registers ringing. <br />Montour pointed out that the City wants the sign to <br />look like it was planned for the area and that it looks <br />new. <br />Hotzler replied that the design does this, and all new <br />materials will be used on the sign. <br />Carson asked if the sign could be built so that it <br />matches the towers on the mall. <br />Grootwassink felt this would take square footage, and <br />he wanted as much square footage for the business signs <br />as possible. <br />The City Planner replied that his office would not <br />penalize the property owner in sign face for <br />improvements made to the sign poles. <br />Schletty suggested the sign poles be covered with the <br />same materials being used on the shopping center <br />building. That way the sign will look like it belongs <br />to the building. <br />The Planner agreed the architectural character of the <br />sign needs to look like it belongs to the building. <br />Also, the individual tenant signs cannot be back -lit <br />plastic. <br />Grootwassink stated that he cannot imagine who would <br />want a sign with an external light shining on it. <br />Hotzler pointed out that the success of the shopping <br />center is dependent on signage. Hotzler indicated a <br />large amount of money is being spent on the shopping <br />center, and was concerned the City would hamper the <br />project over signage. <br />The City Planner reported there are very attractive <br />signs in other communities which are not plastic, back- <br />lit signs, and most of the new signage was not plastic <br />or back -lit. <br />Grootwassink stated that he hoped the City Planner did <br />8 <br />Page 68 <br />
