PHALEN CHAIN
OF LAKES
WATERSHED PROJECT
1902 E. County Road B • Maplewood MN 55109 • ph: 612/ 777 -3665
November 4, 1996
Mayor Mike Fahey and City Council Members
City of Little Canada
515 East Little Canada Road
Little Canada, Minnesota 55117
Dear Mayor Fahey and Council Members:
On November 13, staff and members of the Phalen Chain of Lakes Watershed Project
Natural Resources Board will attend your Council meeting to provide an update on our
activities in 1996, and discuss proposed activities for 1997.
It has been a pleasure for us to work with the City and organizations in Little Canada this
year on projects like the plantings at Gervais Mill Pond Park, Round Lake water quality
assessment and City Center project, and milfoil issues on Gervais Lake. We appreciated
your contribution of $4,000 to our 1996 budget to keep the project working through the
end of the year.
The Ramsey - Washington Metro Watershed District Board listened to the comments of the
six cities in the project area that suggested that the District assume the adminstrative costs of
the Watershed Project beginning in 1997, on behalf of local communities, and the District
is proposing to do this in its new Water Management Plan. In view of this, we will not be
requesting a contribution from you for our budget this year. The City of Maplewood is
planning to continue its $10,000 contribution in 1997, to ensure that our staff and interns
will be available to work on projects with the city. We invite Little Canada and other
communities to make similar contributions, to expand the work of the Project, and ensure
that staff or interns will be available to work on projects that you identify.
When we meet with you on November 13, we will be asking for your thoughts on projects
or issues that you would like our staff and Board to work with you on next year. Our
Board's priorities are to work on natural resources projects and issues that are visible, and
that use the best available science and creative ideas to improve resource quality, meet
community needs, and educate citizens, businesses, and local governments about natural
resources in our area. We look forward to meeting with you on November 13. If you
have questions, please call Sherri Buss at 777 -3665.
Sincerely,
Dana Larsen- Ramsay
Co- Chair, Natural Resources Board
and H. B.
