County Road 8 • Maplewood MN 55109 • ph: 612/777 -3665
PROJECT ACTIVITIES BENEFITING LOCAL COMMUNITIES
IN 1996
1996 was another productive year for the Phalen Chain of Lakes
Watershed Project. During this year, the Natural Resources Board
and staff became locally funded, and worked with local partners on
many projects to benefit natural resources and local communities.
With an administrative budget of $75,000, we leveraged over
$350,000 in public and private funds for local projects implemented
this year, and raised an additional $300,000 for projects in 1997.
Highlights this year have included the following:
Design and construction of the Innovative Maplewood
Stormwater Project, a model for other neighborhoods that
tests an attractive alternative to curb and gutter streets to
infiltrate Stormwater and protect water quality.
Completed designs for the Sod Farm Urban Ecology
Center in North St. Paul, and raised over $150,000
for design and construction of this project. Four
schools will use this 20 -acre restored wetland for hands -on
learning.
Raised over $20,000 in Conservation Partners funds
and volunteer services to complete prairie
plantings at Gervais Mill Pond in Little Canada,
and Biological Monitoring at 12 sites throughout
the Watershed.
Worked with St. Paul on design and funding for the
first phase of the Phalen Wetland Park Project,
which will be built in spring, 1997. The City
has now raised nearly $1 million for the full wetland
restoration project on the Phalen Shopping Center site.
Page 15
