515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 551 17 -1 600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
November 13, 1996
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Kathy Glanzer, Administrative Assistant
RE: Building Permit and Setback Requirements for Sheds
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R Hanson
Based on recent discussion of building permit and setback
requirements for sheds which are 120 square feet or smaller and
are not set on a permanent foundation, I have surveyed the
surrounding cities to determine their requirements. Below are
the results of that survey:
Arden Hills - No building permit required.
Setbacks of 10 feet are required from the
side and rear lot lines.
Falcon Heights - Building Permits are required for all
sheds, including small sheds not on a
permanent foundation.
Setbacks of 5 feet are required from the
side and rear lot lines. A 1 foot setback
is allowed if the shed is in the rear 20%
of the lot, including setback. For
example, 20 feet would be the rear 20% of
a lot having a 100 foot depth. If the
shed, plus the 1 foot setback, could be
within that 20 feet, the 1 foot setback is
permitted.
Maplewood - Building Permits are not required for sheds
which are 120 square feet in size or smaller.
Setbacks of 5 feet are required from the side
and rear lot lines.
Roseville - Building Permits and site drawings are required
for all sheds.
Setbacks of 5 feet are required from the side
and rear lot lines.
Page 62
