M -3 <br />Action Alert <br />GENERAL REVENUE SHARING IN GRAVE JEOPARDY <br />INFORMATION FROM CITIES REQUESTED <br />OPPORTUNITY TO TESTIFY ON MARCH 15 <br />Urgent developments regarding the future of General Revenue Sharing (GRS) after <br />next September are unfolding in Washington next week. Senator Pete Domenici <br />(R - -N. Mexico), Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, has tentatively <br />scheduled markup of the FY86 federal budget for next week and wants to hear <br />directly from cities about the importance of GRS in terms of local budgets, <br />services, and the impact on local tax rates and tax burdens. <br />With many members of Congress unaware of the critical importance of GRS <br />revenues to city operations, it becomes critical for city officials to provide <br />specific details on the use of GRS funds for essential services and the outlook <br />for reduced levels of those operations that may result from a termination of <br />the GRS program now being considered in Congress. <br />In the U.S. House, Representative Ted Weiss (D - -NY), Chairman of the House <br />Revenue Sharing Subcommittee has announced tentative dates for a series of <br />hearings set to take place across the nation. The purpose of these sessions <br />with city officials is to explore the importance of GRS and the implications <br />for national municipal policy of its proposed elimination. <br />The currently scheduled meeting convenient <br />March 15, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. LMC is <br />officials who would like to testify on the <br />GRS.
