M -3 Action Alert GENERAL REVENUE SHARING IN GRAVE JEOPARDY INFORMATION FROM CITIES REQUESTED OPPORTUNITY TO TESTIFY ON MARCH 15 Urgent developments regarding the future of General Revenue Sharing (GRS) after next September are unfolding in Washington next week. Senator Pete Domenici (R - -N. Mexico), Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, has tentatively scheduled markup of the FY86 federal budget for next week and wants to hear directly from cities about the importance of GRS in terms of local budgets, services, and the impact on local tax rates and tax burdens. With many members of Congress unaware of the critical importance of GRS revenues to city operations, it becomes critical for city officials to provide specific details on the use of GRS funds for essential services and the outlook for reduced levels of those operations that may result from a termination of the GRS program now being considered in Congress. In the U.S. House, Representative Ted Weiss (D - -NY), Chairman of the House Revenue Sharing Subcommittee has announced tentative dates for a series of hearings set to take place across the nation. The purpose of these sessions with city officials is to explore the importance of GRS and the implications for national municipal policy of its proposed elimination.
