Chlebeck Clerk- Treasurer City of Little Canada 515 Little Canada Road Little Canada, MN 55117 Dear Mr. Chlebeck: JUL 21 1986 CITY OF LITTLE CANADA This letter is in response to a correspondence I received from a council meeting on February 12, 1986. A citizen complained that Little Canada residents could not use their snowmobiles on Lake Gervais during a Winter Carnival snowmobiling event. The snowmobile event held was a speed run. This is the equivalent of drag car racing for snowmobiles. The par- ticipants travel down a 11 mile track while being timed. The Ramsey County Sheriffs Department, Lakes & Trails Department, and our race organizers all feel that it is of utmost importance to secure the area from any traffic for safety reasons. With snowmobiles traveling over 100 mph it is in everyone's interest to limit traffic and stay out of the way. Since our current race director has organized the race, we have had no crashes or injuries. The Ramsey County Sheriffs Department has called this event the safest and most orga- nized event they have been associated with. Although it is unfortunate that a citizen registered a complaint, thousands of other people greatly enjoyed themselves and the event. The Saint Paul Winter Carnival Association is doing prelim- inary scheduling and would like to know the availability of Lake Gervais. The event would be held on January 31 or February 1. We must stress that we would not allow non- participating snowmobiles on the lake again for safety reasons. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call. Thank you for your time.
