Minnesota Department of Transportation <br />With passage of Chapter 421, M.S. 1977, the Minnesota Legislature <br />authorized financial assistance to local units of government for <br />"the acquisition and betterment of parks, trails, wildlife lands <br />and outdoor athletic courts." <br />This legislation appropriated to the Commissioner of Transportation <br />a sum of $1,700,000 . to establish a program for the development of <br />bikeways primarily on existing road rights of way. <br />In addition, the program includes a system of grants to local units <br />in the development of bikeways primarily on existing road rights of <br />way. This appropriation, $2,100,000, is to be allocated in the <br />following manner: <br />$ 700,000 metropolitan area (7- county area) <br />$ 1,400,000 outstate <br />As stipulated by this mandate, a grant shall not exceed 75 percent <br />of the costs of the bikeway development. <br />The criteria for project evaluation and selection is presently being <br />developed.
