M »4ORANDUM
To: Kenneth E. Weltzin
From: Paul Kirkwold fir
Subject: Comments Regarding In -place Control Signs at County'Road C and
Lake Shore Avenue
Date: April 11, 1979
As per request the following comments are offered regarding in -place signs
and controls at the above location:
1) The location is a quad approach intersection at approximately right
angles. There are no unusual geometries near the control points that
would require special consideration as compared to several others
throughout the county.
2) Normal traffic services policy requires the installation of 36" stop
signs at these locations. Federal and state regulations require the
placement of a 30" sign as a minimum. Larger signs are placed at the
discretion of the jurisdiction. Thirty -six inch (36 ") signs are in place
at this location (see drawing),
Normal traffic services policy requires the installation of 36" stop
ahead signs at these locations. Federal and state regulations reauire
the placement of a 30" sign as a minimum. Larger signs are placed at
the discretion of the jurisdiction. These regulations further state
installation is only required when sufficient visibility distance is
not present to permit the driver to bring his vehicle to a stop at the
sign. A 36" sign is in place for westbound and a 48" sign is in place
for eastbound (see drawing).
At 40 m.p.h. sufficient stopping distance is 300 feet. This is the dis-
tance required for normal deceleration of passenger cars.
3)
4 +)
13
