5) Eastbound signs are visible from the following distances: <br />STOP AHEAD - 760 feet <br />STOP - 54+0 feet <br />Westbound signs are visible from the following distances: <br />STOP AHEAD - 600 feet <br />STOP - 580 feet <br />This means the driver is continually notified of the stop control 900 <br />feet from the stop line for eastbound and 1180 feet from the stop line <br />westbound. These distances far exceed the acceptable standards for <br />stop nhead sign placement and stopping sight distance. <br />6) This department uses a practice similar to that of several other agencies <br />for the placement of flags, different color panels and over -size signs <br />by only using these for the placement of new, temporary or emergency <br />controls and normally not at a location where the stop control has been <br />the routine for some period of time. Should these placements be used <br />at the routine stop locations additional measures must be taken to get <br />the extra "punch" needed for new or different controls. <br />7) Accidents over the period 1975 through 1978 indicate eleven accidents <br />over this period. Only one report indicated the driver did not see <br />the sign. Other comments were: <br />Failed to stop - 4 <br />Accident occurred after both vehicles stopped - 5 <br />Drinking - 1 <br />These proportions are probably normal for any similar intersection. <br />8) Intersection control beacons are intended for use at intersections <br />where traffic or physical conditions do not justify conventional <br />traffic signals but where high accident rates indicate a special <br />
