MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
MAY 10, 2006
trapping and utilizing birds for food. Cooper stated that he is always
looking for new tools to address the issue, but stated that it would be
unethical for him to recommend a method Chat did not work.
Christine Smith, Jessica Court, reported on her experience with the round-
up last year and asked that the City provide some notice of round ups. She
also reported that there are only two families of geese on Round Lake and
asked that Round Lake be exempted Prom the round up this year. Smith
asked if there are other communities that have decided not to do round ups
and why.
Cooper replied that he does not gather information on the communities
that have not done round ups, but addresses the issues of communities
with goose population problems. Cooper also reported that conditions in
some communities such as lack of wetland areas result in fewer geese.
Cooper stated that his program is not one of promotion, but it is a tool for
managing the goose population. Cooper also commented on the
difficulties for his group to notice people of the round up.
Smith asked that Che City include a notice in the newsletter at a minimum.
The City Administrator pointed out that Che City's newsletter deadline is
right now, which is too early to have specific information on when and
where a round up will occur. He noted that the first step would be for Dr.
Cooper to do an inventory of the goose population so that round up
locations can be determined. Once the locations are identified, there is a
five week time period that Dr. Cooper has to work with to complete all
round ups in the Metro area. Coordination of round up sites, weather,
travel between locations etc. are factors that impact the dates and times of
round ups.
The consensus was that the City would include a general notice in the City
newsletter and more specific information on its Web site and cable
channel.
Smith stated that she was against Che round ups, but could empathize with
the concerns of others who supported the round ups. She again asked that
Round Lake be exempted from the round up this year. Smith pointed out
that humans are squeezing animals out of their habitat, and suggested that
some room that to be provided for animal habitat.
Paul Huot, Savage Lake, stated that he supports the goose round up and
noted the impact on his property as well as Che water quality of Savage
Lake. He reported that there are approximately 15 nesting birds on
