Ramsey County Department of Public Works
350 St. Peter Street
Suite 270
Saint Paul, Minnesota 55102
(612) 2984127
February 23, 1987
Mr. Joseph G. Weltzin
Director
and
County Engineer
Paul L. Kirkwold
Deputy Director
and
Assistant County Engineer
Thank you for your letter of February 5, 1987, regarding the Ramsey County Regional
Recreational Bikeway System Plan. As your letter indicated, this plan recommended
construction of a bicycle lane around Lake Gervais. The plan was amended in 1985
to transfer the recommendation for a route on the south side of Lake Gervais from
County Road B2 to County Road B.
On the west side of Lake Gervais, Edgerton Street has had a bicycle lane constructed
on each side of the travel lanes. State bicycle grant funds supplied 75 percent of the
cost of the bicycle lane construction on Edgerton Street. County funds supplied the
remaining costs. The state bicycle grant program has had no funds for construction
of bicycle lanes or paths for the last several years. Keller Parkway on the north and
east sides of the lake has no bicycle lane at present nor are there any sources of funds
available to the County for construction of bicycle lanes on Keller Parkway. In addition,
construction of a bicycle lane on Keller Parkway would require removal of some trees
and affect steep slopes at some locations adjacent to the road.
If Little Canada desires a bicycle lane constructed on Keller Parkway, Ramsey County
would be willing to approve such construction if the City agrees to pay for the costs
for the lane.
Please contact me if that is a proposal the City would like to discuss.
Kenneth E.
