MINUTES
Planning Commission
Sept. 10, 1987
Ruvelson presented diagrams of the proposed sign with and without
the variance, pointing out that the sign with the variance is more
aesthetically pleasing as well as reads better. Ruvelson felt that
the larger sign was a more effective sign.
Costa asked if the sign would be lit.
Ruvelson replied that the sign, regardless of whether or not the
variance is granted, would be internally lit.
DeLonais stated that he was in favor of the height variance being
granted as similar variances have been granted in the past. However,
DeLonais felt if the square footage variance was granted, this would
set a precedent in the City. DeLonais pointed out that Slumberland
would also have a sign on its building which he felt would be highly
visible from the freeway.
Mr. DeLonais recommended that the Slumberland sign height variance be
granted allowing Slumberland to erect a 40 foot high sign.
Motion seconded by Mr. Perlinger.
Motion carried 6 - 0.
Mr. Perlinger recommended that the Slumberland sign variance for
an additional 180 square footage be denied based on the fact that
the variance does not meet City Code requirements to prove a hardship.
Motion seconded by Mrs. Schweizer.
Motion carried 6 - 0.
Property The City Planner explained that when the plat for Thunder Bay II
Divisions Addition was approved, it included property owned by the Newman's
Thunder Sack's, Campbell's and Wright's. In order to file the plat,
Bay II separate property divisions need to be approved for these properties
Addition so that separate legal descriptions can be drawn up to be filed
as part of the plat. The Planner informed the Commission that the
plat will be exactly as was approved previously, and this is just
an administrative detail that was overlooked.
Mr. Herkenhoff recommended approval of the necessary property divisions
for the Newman, Sack, Campbell and Wright properties so that the
developer can file the final plat of Thunder Bay II Addition.
Motion seconded by Mr. Perlinger.
Motion carried 6 - 0.
Page 2
