MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
JUNE 6, 2013
Memorial as well as the emblems of the various military branches. The
installation of three pull -off parking spaces is planned along Little Canada
for the casual visitor. Sanders noted that there is a significant slope from
Little Canada Road to Round Lake; therefore, adding the parking at street
level is most efficient.
Sanders next reviewed the plan to extend existing concrete sidewalks
along Little Canada Road that would extend through the Round Lake Park
area and back up to street level. The sidewalks would be maintained at a
5% grade so they will be handicapped accessible. Sanders noted that
extension of sidewalks has always been a part of the plan for this park
area.
Additional features of the memorial include a large granite stone with a
polished top that will include an inscription on the top. There will be
benches along the walking path. Sanders noted that there will be the
potential for future additional interpretive features as part of the
memorial. Sanders indicated that the Round Lake Park is a good location
for this Veterans' Memorial and fits the site well.
With regard to cost, Sanders noted that given the Park Commission has
always planned for a sidewalk through Round Lake Park, he suggested
that the Park Commission provide the funding for the sidewalk
improvement.
Steinert asked about the flag poles. Sanders noted that three flag poles
would be added behind the plaza wall, and there would be lighting on the
flag poles. There are no plans for other lighting of this area.
Slain agreed that Round Lake Park was a good site for the Veterans'
Memorial.
The Parks & Recreation Director asked how far the approval process was
with regard to the concept plan. Sanders indicated that this concept was
reviewed by the Veterans' Memorial Committee a couple of weeks ago
and it received a positive response. However, the plan has not been
finally approved by the Committee. Sanders indicated that they are also
discussing funding options and hoping for City involvement in paying for
landscaping and parking improvements, Park Commission involvement in
paying for sidewalks, and Veterans' Memorial Committee fund - raising
through a buy -a -brick program to pay for the memorial itself as well as
the wall and flags. Bricks would be installed as part of the plaza area.
2
