Veterans Memorial Committee Minutes
May 20, 2013
Present: Rocky Waite, Dan Ryan, Kathy Hanson, Judy Berggren, Frank Costa, Rick Montour, Shelly Boss,
Bill Sanders, Joel Hanson, and Jessica Jagoe
The meeting began at 6:00 p.m.
Sanders distributed copies of the memorial concept plan.
Berggren commented that she initially thought the memorial should be located closer to Round Lake.
Sanders said the placement was due to maintaining accessibility on the site. Waite asked Sanders what
he envisioned for the interpretive features. Sanders indicated that these could be used to tell the
history of the site (i.e. well house, park, lake) or it could be used for some future veterans memorial
piece that we may not know of now, but allow space for. K. Hanson said she liked leaving room for Plan
B. Sanders said that maybe he should go through his concept plan and then the committee can
comment.
Sanders said what he got from the group at the last meeting was that the memorial should be simple.
He said he wanted to create a memorial that was straight forward, but appropriate and powerful in its
message. The walkway has a 5% grade by bringing it down as shown it is within accessibility limits. The
walkway couldn't go down on the site any further without changing the grade. Sanders stated it was his
feeling they will want accessible features and felt they should stay at this grade.
Sanders reviewed that he didn't want to bring the parking into the site due to grade issues. If that was
done the committee would need to look at retaining walls. This plan provides for three on- street spaces
that allow visitors to pull off to the site and could comply with handicap accessible. Sanders added that
this would need to be reviewed by the City Engineer for confirmation.
Sanders pointed out that this site has the opportunity to work with the existing plaza. He felt that
working with the pavers in their current location allows the committee to replace with new as part of
the memorial. He said the % wall design could have writing on it or could display the seven branches of
service insignias with the flagpoles behind the % wall. Sanders showed the actual memorial feature
along the walkway. This feature would be polished stone on top with a rough stone edge about table
height and an irregular shape with wording on top. The writing could be a poem or whatever the
committee decides they want to go with.
Ryan asked if bricks could go into the wall to avoid water damage. Sanders stated that they should go
on the ground and that this area has held up well with the existing pavers. K. Hanson brought up that
use of the military insignias on the wall was a good idea.
Sanders stated that he felt this concept covered all of what the plaza and memorial needed. He added
that the Interpretive features could be used for the ideas stated earlier or geology of the area. Waite
asked if the sidewalk loop was pavers as well. Sanders stated that he was thinking concrete. He added
that trails are typically asphalt, but sticking with what current exists in the plaza he recommended
1
6
