continuing with concrete. Plus, there would be extra maintenance with pavers. However, he felt
keeping the existing streetscape design was the best. He mentioned that the existing paver base must
be good because this area is holding up well. Waite asked how many pavers we could get in the space.
Sanders said there were a lot, but he wasn't sure of the exact number. He guessed several hundred
while also commenting that he didn't think the committee would need that many.
Sanders mentioned that one thing he really liked about the plan was that it was implementable. Ryan
added that he liked that it allowed for expansion.
Montour asked about using signs similar to those on the Firefighters Historic Trail. Sanders said that the
committee could do something similar. He said they could also have a special tree which was another
idea remembered being brought up at the last meeting. Berggren added that she would like to see the
use of cherry trees like those in Washington D.C. K. Hanson said that those trees are only in bloom for
so few days. Berggren said they could use red maples for the fall and that this area has a lot of space for
planting.
Sanders estimated that the costs for the plan as shown would be about $70,000. Ryan asked if the
sidewalk by the street would be the cost of the city. Sanders said some of those items will need to be
discussed. Sanders pointed out that the lower walk is part of the Park Plan, but they will need to ask the
Parks Commission and that maybe the upper is considered part of the existing streetscape walk.
Sanders said he was not aware of any budget for either and said they would need to ask participation
from Parks and the City Council.
Sanders suggested that the committee do fundraising. He said a realistic figure would be to get about
$5,000 from the pavers and maybe a donation of $250 a piece for the insignias, but they could solicit
veteran groups for that.
Costa asked how high the %, wall was. Sanders estimates about 24 inches, but said they need to have
enough room for lettering and insignias. Costa asked what type of cap it would have. Sanders said it
would be poured and colored concrete.
K. Hanson stated that the walkway along the parking is really necessary. Sanders agreed.
Waite mentioned that when he started this idea, he set out to do three things. 1. Recognizing the three
Little Canada Veterans which he believes could be accomplished with the pavers. 2. Contain something
for the war dogs. 3. A computer somewhere on the site that can record stories. Berggren added that
they could use a plaque on walkway for the war dogs. Montour mentioned use of one of the
interpretive signs. Ryan suggested contacting PetSmart or Petco for donations. Waite asked how we
will get a computer In the memorial. J. Hanson said he would contact Terre Heiser when he returns
from vacation and ask about the logistics of this. Ryan suggested using the scanner tags versus a
computer.
K. Hanson said she would like the memorial to stay generic without naming wars. Sanders agreed.
