J. Hanson asked if something should be put together to ask the Parks Commission and Council about
funding. Sanders said the Parks Commission will be touring the site in June.
Sanders asked the committee what their comfort level was with this concept plan and did they have any
changes. K. Hanson asked what landscaping would be around the memorial stone itself. Sanders said
that would be crushed rock. Berggren said she would like to see another bench closer to the memorial
and that she would like to see backs on the benches. Waite suggested asking the Parks Department for
benches. Costa and Montour both said that maybe someone would want to donate a bench. Montour
added that the benches could be like the stone of the memorial. He added that he liked the design and
felt Sanders was headed in the right direction. Sanders said he like the public visibility of the site.
Sanders asked the committee if they liked the name "Veterans Memorial Plaza ". The committee agreed
and Berggren said the name was nice.
Berggren asked If the flagpoles would be lit. Sanders stated that flagpoles are supposed to be unless the
flags are taken down.
Boss said initially she thought the plan was plain, but when a few trees are added it will be nice. Sanders
said maybe people will want to donate a tree instead of a paver.
Waite felt the next step was to find out what the City will do with sidewalks and what Parks will do.
J. Hanson said he would work with the City Engineer on the parking bays and Terre Heiser on the
computer /tag options. Berggren said they should use tags so people can use their phones. Montour
mentioned that an issue will be who updates and how to keep up with technology.
Waite asked if everyone liked the memorial with stone. Sanders said it would be polished on top. Costa
asked if it made sense to put something in brail. Sanders figured this wouldn't be too much more
expensive to do. Berggren suggested a plaque alongside with brail writing. Waite asked if the wording
was etched In the stone. Sanders said yes and added the words will be permanent so choosing the right
words that aren't controversial is important. Sanders said they will need to find the right stone that has
character. Ryan said he preferred Minnesota stone. Sanders suggested Cold Spring. Berggren asked
about limestone. Sanders said he went away from that idea, but they could use limestone for the
benches.
The committee agreed to head over to the site.
The next meeting was set for Monday, June 10`h at 6 p.m.
The meeting adjourned after the tour at 7:10 p.m.
3
8
