Building Codes andStandards Division <br />Adopted Rules Governing Amendments to the State Building Code Entitled Proposed <br />Optional Appendix E Automatic Fire Suppression Systems <br />Rule as Adopted <br />2 NICAR *1.10020 Optional provisions for installation of on- premises fire suppression systems. <br />A. Purpose. This rule authorises optional provisions for the installation of on- premises lire suppression systems in new <br />construction. It is intended to alleviate increasing demands for additional fire suppression resources by allowing a municipality <br />to adopt the optional provisions of this rule haled on its local fire suppression capabilities. <br />B. Municipal option. The sprinkler system requirements in C. may he adopted without change by a municipality. 1r they are <br />adopted. the requirements ;ire applicable throughout the nu nicip;lity Inc new buildings. additions to buildings. and buildings fur <br />w Inch the occupancy classification is changed. <br />C. Requirements. Automatic sprinkler systems mull he installed :mil maintained in operable condition in buildings in the <br />occupancy classifications listed in 1.-12. This requirement is in addition to utter minimum requirements set in the stale building <br />code. The height and area increases provided ii+r in sections 506 and 507 of the Uniform Building Code. as adopted in the state <br />building code exw he n1+l4lied are applicable. <br />I. Group A -1 occupancies. <br />2. (croup A -2 occupancies with an occupant load of 300 or more. <br />3. Group A -2.1 occupancies. <br />4. Group 13 -1 service stations with 3.000 or more gross sq. fl. of area. not including canopies. <br />5. Group 11 -1 parking garages with 5.(X10 or more gross sq. ft. of area. <br />6. Group B -2 offices and post - secondary classrooms w stn 8.500 or more gross sq. IL of area or three or more stories in <br />height. <br />7. Group Ii -2 retail . warehouse. or manufacturing areas with 2.(1(111 or more gross sq. fl. of area or three ur nwre stories in <br />height. <br />8. (croup E -I and I-. -2 occupancies with 8.500 or more gross sq. fl. in area or two or more stories in height, except for <br />minor additions that du not increase the occupant load or significantly increase the tire load. <br />9. Group E -3 occupancies with an occupant load of all or more. <br />10. Group 11 -4 occupancies with 3.(1011 or more gross sq. 11. of area. <br />11. Group R -I apartment houses with 8.500 or nwre gross sq.
