Training Method
The Newgate Vocational Auto
Body Program provides students
with the opportunity for hands
on work experience and training
in a setting similar to a profit
making shop but with the advan-
tage of special schedules and
work supervisors trained to
assist the participants to develop
the vocational skills, work habits
and attitudes necessary to
become a successfully employed
adult.
Students in the auto body pro-
gram team by working with
experienced trainees in a variety
of renovation projects from
repairing collision damage to
van conversion to classic car
restoration. Students are trained
in all phases of the business
including body repair, straighten-
ing, spotting in, repainting,
welding and an introduction to
estimating.
3
Pay for
Production
Students are initially provided
with a basic stipend to cover
lunch and transportation costs.
As students gain in skill and
knowledge, they are assigned
individual projects and become
eligible to participate in the
student income contract.
Students working under the
income contract are paid a pre-
determined amount of money
for each vehicle completed. The
vehicle contract amount is deter-
mined by the vocational in-
structor according to the amount
and complexity of the work. The
amount to be eamed depends
upon both speed and quality of
work, thereby providing a con-
tinuous incentive for improve-
ment.
