The city has applied for a <br />grant to help pay for the land. <br />D <br />if <br />Ni; <br />✓ <br />r� <br />27 <br />Little Canada <br />Little Canada senior citizens, led <br />by Johanna Gallagher, asked the <br />council last week if a city sugges- <br />tion that a fire sprinkler system be <br />installed would jeopardize the <br />project, which she's been suppor- <br />ting for several years. <br />"We don't want.to see it (a sprin- <br />kler requirement) kill the project," <br />Councilman Michael Fahey said <br />"But if we can cut something else <br />out, then I'd want the sprinklers." <br />Rocheford said a city require- <br />ment for sprinklers could throw a <br />wrench into plans. <br />"We don't have them in any <br />other elderly buildings except in <br />the case of a hi- rise," Rocheford <br />said in an interview. „ What do you <br />take out? These are basic housing <br />units. There are no disposals, <br />dishwashers, balconies or garages. <br />It's very difficult to make these de- <br />velopments work even without the <br />extras. <br />"1 think there are some miscon- <br />ce,,'ions about the building” he <br />c anued '"These are apartments <br />for independent living. It's not a <br />nursing home. There will be smoke <br />detectors, fire walls, alarms, mag- <br />netic door closers. We are trying to <br />make housing available to these <br />people and we just can't raise the <br />rents (to cover additional costs for <br />sprinkler systems).
